PAN PICK#1

Feb. 22 — A GWAR show holds the promise of several infallible elements: blood, slaughter, bare ass and a soaking wet audience. I know, I know, "I am SO there already," you say. But allow me to continue for your educational enlightenment.

GWAR puts the retch in wretched by dressing in costumes reminiscent of Evil Ash in Army of Darkness. Abominable horns, spikes, steel-trap helmets and blunt objects for bludgeoning are distastefully wielded during a variety of death-metal ditties. Stage monkeys, also appropriately suited in satanic rags, cart out whichever one of their cohorts has been chosen to represent the likeness of well-known celebrities such as Paris Hilton, George Bush and Lacey Petersen—and proceed to dismember and disembowel them, much to the delight of the audience. No one is safe, and nothing is sacred. The carnage begins, and the crowd gets spewed with the bright red or green fake blood from flayed intestines and torsos. It's only too convenient that a sliced intestine is perfectly structured to function as a high-powered fire hose of blood! I will offer one warning: It stains. Last time I went to a GWAR show my contacts came out pink, my face looked sunburned and my armpit was stained green. Short of wearing a wetsuit and snorkel, there's no way you'll get out clean either!

GWAR will take you where you subconsciously have always wanted to go, but you won't truly appreciate it until you get blasted with the colossal blood cannon at the end of the show. Even if you go home with red Underoos, you'll be glad you were there for the absurdity of such delightfully wicked entertainment. Bruce Campbell would be proud.

GWAR plays with All That Remains and Alabama Thunderpussy at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th St., Boulder, 303-786-7030.

PAN PICK#2

Feb. 21 — From the time she was 10, Farida Mahwash says she had a great interest in music, and by age 22 she was performing on a radio station in Kabul, Afghanistan. Mahwash would eventually become an ustad (master), an international sensation and come to be regarded as Afghanistan's greatest female singer.

On Feb. 21, Mahwash will perform at Macky Auditorium in Radio Kabul: Ustad Mahwash and Friends—Music and Songs from Afghan People as part of CU's Artist Series. Originally Mahwash, who has been living in the United States for the past 12 years, was scheduled to perform with Ensemble Kabul at this event; however, the Afghanistan-based group was unable to obtain U.S. visas. But supported by a new backing band of U.S.-based Afghan musicians, the show will go on—and on tap is an evening of music incorporating Indian, Persian and Arabic traditions.

"My style of music is the original folk Afghan music," says Mahwash. "My music is much more traditional."

Unfortunately, Mahwash's music—all music, in fact—couldn't be heard in her home country not that long ago.

"After the Mujahidin came in the country, music became somewhat weak and limited. Men were allowed only," says Mahwash. "However, after the Taliban took over, they banned music."

Mahwash says that the situation has improved in recent years, and she hopes to see this trend continue.

"Culture has an important part in a country's prime development. It is supposed to move forward along with financial and political developments," she says. "If a country develops and moves forward financially or politically but not culturally, it would make it a rather weak country. I don't believe that Afghanistan has developed much culturally within the last 10 or 12 years, but it has been going much better within the last two or three years."

Mahwash says it is her goal to one day return to Afghanistan and perform for her fans. In the meantime, she is keeping the traditional music of her native land alive by performing internationally and making records, including her most recent Radio Kaboul.

Radio Kabul: Ustad Mahwash and Friends—Music and Songs from Afghan People starts at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 21, at Macky Auditorium, CU Campus, Boulder, 303-492-8008. The performance is preceded by a pre-concert conversation with CU Professor of Ethnomusicology Brenda Romero at 6:45 p.m.
