One Year Ago

For decades, the Colorado Insectary, part of the state Department of Agriculture, raised and dispersed dozens of bug species that took on plant and insect pests threatening the state. But recent legislation threatened to take away all funding from the 59-year-old insectary. Joel Warner reported on the growing debate among Colorado's politicians and the state's anti-pesticide community.

Five Years Ago

In the story titled "Drug Mistreatment," Jake Ginsky investigated the industry of teen rehabilitation and its growing efforts to relabel teen rebellion as "crime." At an increasing rate, the industry was prescribing strict and expensive rehabilitation programs for kids who dabbled in recreational drug use. For example, one 15-year-old was caught smoking pot and landed himself in after-school treatment four times a week for three months. In addition to administering random urine tests, the teen's parents were ordered to remove all alcohol from the house and also had to attend weekly AA meetings. Now that's one freaky after-school special.

Nine Years Ago

Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away columnist Hans Bjordhal editorialized about a quaint little political party that just couldn't pull its shit together. Yes folks, think long and hard—all the way back to the '90s when the Republicans were desperately trying to put together a platform that would beat Bill Clinton out of the White House. Unfortunately the motley crew of Steve Forbes, Bob Dole, Lamar Alexander and Pat Buchanan did little to streamline the party's message during the Republican Primaries of 1996.
