PAN PICK#1

Feb. 21 – Yes, it’s that time of year again. Time to help end domestic violence and eat chocolate at the 23rd annual Chocolate Lovers’ Fling. As their most prominent charity event of the year, the Boulder County Safehouse has once again whipped up a decadent soiree sure to satiate the philanthropic chocolate connoissuer’s deepest carnal yens.

Beginning with bubbly and hors d’oeuvres, one can warm up by gingerly padding around the silent auction bidding, perhaps, on a vast array of items donated by local businesses. Post-auction, there will be a buffet dinner and the much-anticipated chocolate dessert organza put on by Boulder’s finest bakeries, chocolatiers et al. Finally, one has the chance to shake out the sugar buzz and burn off the buffet by gyrating to Colorado’s hippest Beatles tribute band, the FAB 4.

Come support the Boulder County Safehouse, a nonprofit organization that aids battered women and their children while focusing on the arrestment of domestic violence.

The Chocolate Lovers’ Fling begins at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Glenn Miller Ballroom, University Memorial Center, CU Campus, Boulder, 303-449-8623. For more information, visit www.bouldercountysafehouse.org.

PAN PICK#2

Feb. 26 –Another funky Mardi Gras is going down. The gumbo’s spicy, the music’s jumpin’ and who wouldn’t trade some ratty old beads for a drunken peep show on the street. But if you can’t make it to New Orleans this holiday, let the Rebirth Brass Band bring Bourbon Street to you.

For over 20 years the Louisiana-based, eight-piece brass band has been drawing huge crowds playing their updated version of throwback ragtime and social-club grooves. In recent years, they’ve become a Boulder staple, and on Feb. 26 they once again turn the Fox Theatre into the area’s hottest speakeasy.

Rebirth Brass Band plays at 9 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Fox Theatre, 1135 13th St., Boulder, 303-443-3399.

PAN PICK#3

Feb. 19-21 – It’s not easy being a hard working traveling band–especially a tribute band that assumes the form of the legendary Grateful Dead. But that is what the Dark Star Orchestra does, and they do it well. The outing that brings the band to Boulder for three nights at the Fox Theatre has seen the band playing five to six days a week, a grueling travel itinerary and the sudden, shocking death of a crewmember. But despite all of this, the members of DSO have kept rolling, while putting on performances that leave the band spent at the end of the night.

The essence of the band’s live performance was captured, pressed onto plastic and titled Thunder and Lightening. When you close your eyes and hear "Playing in the Band," you can hear the hard work put into what they do and the superb musicianship that flows through the band as a cohesive unit.

Dark Star isn’t just a cover band playing for a couple hundred bucks and a case of Genesee Cream Ale. This is a finely tuned machine that uses music and marketing to establish their own following and a connection with their fans by creating a vibe that conjures the spirit of the Grateful Dead. They give Deadheads a chance to relive hallucinogen-laced memories and allow younger fans, which never had the chance to see the authentic incarnation perform, a glimpse of what all the hype was about.

DSO also takes their charity and activism work very seriously. Instead of just handing out pamphlets about energy conservation, the band will be partnering with Boulder-based, alternative energy company, Renewable Choice, to power all three shows in Boulder with ultra-clean wind power. This is a forward-thinking move that has the same effect as planting 239 trees, keeping 5000 pounds of CO2 out of the atmosphere or not driving a car 6,000 miles–which more than makes up for the use of the fossil fuel it takes to bring the Dark Star Orchestra to a town near you.

Dark Star Orchestra plays at 9:30 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19-21, at the Fox Theatre, 1135 13th St., Boulder, 303-443-3399.
