Sonic shorties
Five young, college-age kids playing old-timey traditional music. Right. In other words, all you barefoot Boulderites with a penchant for soulless music will endear yourselves to them like stink to a Grateful Dead cover band. Michael Lloyd Band — Highwaters EP Denver's Michael Lloyd Band has created one of the most refreshing local discs I've received in the past three years. Strong piano playing, smooth vocals and tight melodies make this easy rock groover a true winner. Fivespeed — Morning Over Midnight Buyer beware: The first track is stellar. The rest pretty forgettable. But sometimes a solid track one is all you can ask for. The Audition — Controversy Loves Company Like many of Victory Records' emo acts, they don't suck, but just sort of blend together with every other uninspired third-wave emo act. Arctic Monkeys — Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not Third-rate Larimer Lounge indie rock, except with a British wannabe-Oasis flare. Plus their name is Arctic Monkeys.
