Camp Guide 2007

We all just wanna be big rock stars
At Dog House Music, Gary Lennox and crew are working to make teens' dreams come true
By Pamela White (editorial@boulderweekly.com)

When Canadian guitar legend Bruce Cockburn told his parents he wanted to play guitar, they were worried he might grow sideburns, wear black leather and take after that terrible Elvis Presley fellow from the United States. But Cockburn was persistent, and, after promising not to grow the aforementioned facial hair, finally got his wish.

Fortunately, today's parents grew up listening to Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin and Aerosmith and are probably less averse to sideburns—not to mention tattoos and odd piercings—than their parents. They're more likely to foster their kids' rock 'n' roll fantasies than to oppose them.

Enter Dog House Music and owner Gary Lennox.

Like so many kids, Gary Lennox once dreamed of being a rock 'n' roll star. As a teenager, he hung around with kids who played guitars until one day they asked him to fill in on bass, even though he'd never played one.

"We just kind of fooled around together in people's houses, and as one house started kind of getting to not accept the loud music, we just kind of moved to the next person's house," Lennox recalls. "We graced them with our musical ability."

Lennox never lost his love of rock and roll music or his appreciation for the significance of dreaming dreams.

For the past three years, Lennox has hosted Rock & Roll Camp at "the Dog House," his state-of-the-art rehearsal complex in Lafayette. Over the course of a week, youth ages 11 to 17 learn from professional musicians how to improve their playing and to write and perform original music. Kids spend the morning learning music theory and improving their skill on their instruments, then break into bands during the afternoon to write music and practice performing together. Local studio musicians teach lessons. Camp concludes with a live concert performed for parents on Dog House's professional stage.

Dog House will host nine week-long sessions this summer, as well as a Spring Break camp March 26-30. Sessions fill up quickly. Last year, 180 young people participated in the program. This year, Lennox is hoping to top 200.

Instruction is available on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums and vocals. Wannabe rockers need not defer their dreams due to lack of instruments. Dog House has some available to loan.

Some of the bands formed during Rock & Roll Camp break up shortly afterwards. But others have gone on to perform at the Boulder Creek Festival and Flatiron Crossing. Last summer, a few Dog House bands had the experience of performing on the stage at the Fox Theatre before a crowd of 175.

"We'll probably try to do that again this summer," Lennox says.

Dog House, which counts Yonder Mountain String Band, the Waves and others among its clients, is sponsoring the teen stage at the Boulder Creek Festival and will be hosting a round of auditions for those performances in early April. Dog House is also one of the sponsors for People's Fair in Denver this summer.

Lennox said Dog House plans to start offering rock 'n' roll birthday parties to younger children, with entertainment provided by teen bands from summer camp.

So what does Rock 'n' Roll Camp look like?

Day One: Campers arrive, looking nervous. Some know each other from previous camps. Others are new to the Dog House. Lennox and his team of professional musicians introduce themselves to the kids, and the kids get a chance to introduce themselves.

Then kids meet with their teachers, depending on which instrument they play. Teachers divide the kids into bands, based in part on ability. Some of the kids have almost no experience; others are accomplished musicians.

The individual bands spend the afternoon together, writing songs, each band in its own rehearsal room. Kids leave wondering how in the world they will possibly manage to write, perfect and perform three original songs by Friday's concert.

Day Two: The morning is spent with instructors learning how better to play their instruments. In the afternoon, kids break into their bands and begin the serious work of writing lyrics and composing original music. A guest musician stops in to give the kids a private concert. (Visiting artists are the norm at the Dog House.)

Day Three: Kids spend the morning with their instructors. The afternoon is divided between practicing the songs each band has composed, but kids also create banners and art for their respective bands—each band has a name—to display at Friday's concert. After all, marketing is a necessary part of succeeding in the music world today.

Day Four: The heat is on. With one day to go before the big performance in front of friends and family, kids spend the day working intensively with instructors and practicing with their bandmates.

Day Five: The morning is spent polishing the songs. Wearing their rock 'n' roll best, kids get ready to take the stage after lunch. Parents, grandparents and siblings arrive, armed with cameras to capture the big moment on stage.

Lennox handles the sound for these important concerts himself, running the bands through sound check, encouraging them, never letting their enthusiasm flag. Instructors offer last-minute encouragement and tips to the budding performers they've spent a week coaching.

The concert hall fills to capacity, with everyone wearing earplugs to protect their ears from the sound. Then the lights go down, and the bands take the stage one at a time, with kids playing their hearts out, getting their 15 minutes of fame. The only thing louder than the music is the cheering of the audience.

What makes the camp work so wonderfully isn't just the enthusiasm the kids bring to the experience, but the focus and support of Lennox and his staff. Having learned from his own youth how valuable music can be to young people, Lennox treats each youngster not as a pesky kid who fumbles over the frets, but as a musician whose plans and goals are worthy of both his attention and his respect. The sign on his office wall, derived from a line in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, sums up his attitude: "You are the makers of music, and you are the dreamers of dreams."

The cost for a week of Rock & Roll Camp is $395 and includes a Dog House T-shirt and a live CD recording of the concert. Lennox is actively seeking sponsors who want to provide scholarships for kids whose families can't afford to send them to camp. He's also looking for donated instruments.

But at the Dog House it's not just kids who get to live the dream. This year, Lennox plans to host an ongoing rock 'n' roll fantasy camp for adults who are sick of playing air guitar and want the thrill of the live stage. Bands that put together enough material for a CD will get help from Lennox in making connections for gigs.
