· Panorama Picks ·

PAN PICK#1

June 12 - As with the Barenaked Ladies and the Tragically Hip, the Clumsy Lovers have certainly survived the Great White Northern tradition of producing talented musical acts. Named after an old bagpipe tune, the Vancouver-based group has successfully combined the sounds of ancient Celtic music with bluegrass and rock 'n` roll. The band's music is eclectic, to say the least, and the Clumsy Lovers are certainly not your run-of-the-mill garage band.

They incorporate traditional Irish jigs into their original music, which is a frenzy of fiddles, drums and banjos. The lyrics carry some Christian overtones but are more theologically thought-provoking than preachy.

The Lovers definitely compel many to listen outside their comfortable music genres, but the group's music is catchy, upbeat and pleasant to hear. It's ideal music for driving-or square dancing, if that's what you're into.

Although they have been making music and touring since 1993, the quintet just released its first studio-produced album, After the Flood, and recently signed on with Nettwerk, a Canadian record label.

The Clumsy Lovers play on Saturday, June 12, at the Trilogy Lounge, 2017 13th St., Boulder, 303-473-WINE. For more information, visit www.clumsylovers.com.

PAN PICK#2

June 16 - R. Kelly said it best when he sang, "You know I can't see nothin' wrong with a lil bump 'n` grind, baby."

Neither can Michelle Baldwin, a.k.a Vivienne VaVoom, founder of Burlesque As It Was, one of Denver's first neo-burlesque troupes.

Baldwin and her troupe have been paramount to the evolution of the once underground movement to a mainstream fetish. Women from all walks of life and backgrounds are now discovering the salacious art and delivering a sense of empowerment to the stage.

Baldwin's book, Burlesque and the New Bump-n-Grind, details the history and recent revival of the lost art and includes many black-and-white photographs from the golden days of burlesque.

Catch Baldwin on her Signin' and Stripteasin' tour Thursday, June 10, at Book Buffs, 1519 S. Pearl St., Denver, 303-722-3630; Friday, June 11, at the Gothic Theatre, 3263 S. Broadway, Englewood, 303-788-0984; Wednesday, June 16, at the Boulder Bookstore, 1107 Pearl St., Boulder, 303-447-2074; and Thursday, June 17, at the Tattered Cover, 16th and Wynkoop, Denver, 303-436-1070.

PAN PICK#3

June 13 - Boulder is saturated with artistic talent and budding local artists. To honor and help promote a handful of these gifted individuals, Kanegis Gallery and Studios owner Dvora Kanegis is hosting a quarterly Sunday Salon Series of new paintings.

Kanegis has been a leader in the arts community for more than 15 years. She has paintings displayed in museums and galleries throughout the United States and has formal artistic training from Skidmore College, Yale University and Colombia University. She is also an art teacher and has helped many artists launch their own careers. She is best-known for her tango-art inspired by the dance she practices and adores so intensely.

The first Sunday Salon Series will include works in a variety of mediums by local artists Lael Har, Jan Mignaud, Kathryn Novak, Jacqueline Wurn and Fern Spangler, along with Kanegis' own work.

Join Kanegis and other local artists for music, refreshments and informal discussion about the paintings, Sunday, June 13, at Kanegis Gallery and Studios, 1025 Rosewood Ave. #108, Boulder. For more information, call 303-332-9122 or 303-444-5442.
