Bookworm or boozehound? It takes a lot of gumption to open up a bar-especially in Boulder, where bars compete for patrons like lions vying for the tenderest bits of an antelope carcass. But you really have to have a set of big brass ones if you decide to take the plunge and open up a bar knowing that a construction project is going to be hammering, pounding and grinding away right outside the front doors for the first, and hardest, months of your bar's existence. Well, owner Dave and the rest of the folks at the Library Pub, located at Broadway and Arapahoe, laughed in the face of danger. They refused to care that the Broadway Reconstruction Project was going to make it appear as though just reaching the bar would be like playing a real-life version of Atari's "Pitfall"-minus, of course, the crocodiles. (For the record, the construction in no way impairs your ability to get to the Library's doors, and there is ample, free-after-6 parking across the street.) They redecorated that beautiful 4,400 square foot building, formerly home to La Estrallita and 32 Degrees, and brought in some gaming tables(pool, foosball), and a whole bunch of televisions, couches, chrome furniture and books. Then, they boldly hung out the "Come in, we're open!" sign. It's a good thing, too, because the Library has all the makings of a success story. The staff (a.k.a., "librarians") work hard to please. The doormen are friendly, the servers attentive, and the bartenders generous with a pour. Three different bars-two on the main floor and one in the upstairs lounge-stand ready to bitch-slap your thirst straight into submission. In addition, through the front windows or from outside on the immense, creek-side patio, you can enjoy glorious Flatirons views. When the weather gets too brisk for outdoor socialization, you can still eat, drink and watch the Boulder Creek burble by from the Library's cozy atrium. For the cost-conscious, the Library has oxymoronically named "permanent specials," including $4.25 pitchers of Coors and Coors Light and $2.50 well drinks. And like all those bars out there called "The Office" that have saved many a marriage by the deceitful nature of their names, students can, shot by shot, deplete their trust funds at the Library Pub. "Mom, what do you mean I'm not studying enough?" you can almost hear 'em say. "I'm at the Library all the time." Respond: letters@boulderweekly.com
