It's picking time. From the mystical mountains and waterfalls of Telluride, Colo., to the heartland of Wyoming, summertime in the Rocky Mountain region means packing up the camp gear, grabbing the old banjo or six-string, and getting back to nature. However, festivarians, whether you're making the drive to southwestern Colorado, heading out to the plains, or just driving up the road to Lyons, it's best to plan ahead for the upcoming season.

Boulder Weekly's compiled the following information to make the pickin' process as easy as possible. Below, you'll find the current line-ups, dates and times for the major events. But remember to check with the websites and phone numbers for the most up-to-date facts on the fests.

What's the straight dope on the Western Slope?
Grand Junction's bluegrass festival kicks off the season in style with Open Road, Gabbie Nolen and more. One-day tickets range in price from $16-25, while the advance 3-Day pass is $48, the Saturday/Sunday pass is $38, weekend RV parking is $20, and weekend tent camping only $10. Telluride Bluegrass Festival
June 20-23

The granddaddy of them all.

Now in its 28th year, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival mixes music with mountains like no other festival in the world. Whether camping out in the hills around town, biking up to the beautiful waterfalls, or tipping some pitchers in the pubs, it's hard not to have a great time in this small and scenic mountain retreat.

Silverton Jubilee Folk Music Festival
June 29-30

As a destination on southwest Colorado's Million Dollar Highway or on the world-famous Durango/Silverton railroad, Silverton remains a silver nugget in the rough, a small, quaint mountain town relatively close to Aspen but untainted by Aspenization.

The town's 15th folk festival is more than folk. Also including everything from hip-hop jazz to jazz, blues to bluegrass, this year's fest should be a great follow-up to Telluride. Tickets, before June 1, go for $30 for Saturday, $35 for Sunday, or $50 for the weekend; after June 1, the weekend package goes up to $60. Pickin' on the Plains Bluegrass and Folk Festival

Family-oriented and friendly, the Colby's 7th Annual Pickin' on the Plains is a good reason to check out what's going on in the northwest corner of our neighbor to the east. Besides free horse-drawn wagon rides, "make and take" children's crafts, and warm days and cool, starry nights-for jamming around the camp fire-Pickin' features traditional and contemporary bluegrass and folk styles.

Wild, beautiful and often desolate, Colorado's neighbor to the north remains a great place to escape, and the Laramie Peak Bluegrass Fest is no exception.

A mere three and a half hours from the Denver metro area, this year's Douglas, Wyo., bluegrass bash features the traditional, gospel and modern bluegrass sound of Jesup, Iowa's Waring family, plus Wyoming's Trouble in the Yard, and Colorado's own Black Rose Quintet.
