In fact, you can even join them–if you sign up in time. This weekend marks the first-annual Boulder Shoot Out 24-Hour Filmmaking Festival, and the fun begins on Friday when contestants meet at the Courthouse at 9 p.m. From there, filmmakers, following the guidelines of the competition, have 24 hours to create a seven-minute film, which will be turned in at 9 p.m. on Saturday. While filmmakers pull an all-nighter on Friday, the festival’s organizers are pulling one on Saturday, viewing and judging each film for the next day’s awards ceremony. On Sunday, the top 10 films will be shown at the Boulder Theater. Contestants will meet at 9 p.m., in front of the Boulder County Courthouse, Pearl Street, Boulder. PAN PICK#1

Oct. 28 – Don’t think classical music is scary? England’s Red Priest will make you think again. This baroque quartet will haunt Boulder with its mad, evil refrains on Oct. 28 with the special Halloween presentation, Nightmare in Venice–A Baroque Fantasy–and the show is going down in arguably Boulder’s most haunted venue: Macky Auditorium.

OK, to be honest Red Priest isn’t mad or evil–or even that scary. Then again, the group’s not trying to be (although Macky’s sinister and ill-reputed towers have turned a few dark hairs white). Taking its moniker from composer Antonio Vivaldi’s nickname, Red Priest is an internationally acclaimed baroque music ensemble who breathe fresh life into stuffy classical music performances and take early music back to its experimental roots.

"The music from that time is very exciting, very experimental. Some of it sounds modern even today," says Piers Adams, the group’s founder and recorder player. "It was a time when people were trying all sorts of tricks. But performances of that music have become a bit standardized. We wanted to break out from that and try to re-establish that feeling of excitement and experimentation."

Red Priest has done this since its inception in 1997 by offering unique interpretations of classic pieces. The group performs from memory, offering an intimate knowledge of the music and more onstage activity. And though it’s not quite theater, a Red Priest show is not just another night at the symphony.

"It’s theatrical in comparison to a concert where you get a row of music stands," says Adams. "The whole concert is performed from memory, we interact with each other on the stage, we make the occasional foray into the audience. It has the feeling of being more of an experience than just a straight-forward classical concert."

While the group has numerous programs that it performs throughout the world, Nightmare in Venice–A Baroque Fantasy is one of the group’s more popular performances–especially when the leaves turn, the air chills and the echoes of Poe cause toes to curl.

"It seems to become more popular at Halloween," says Adams.

The performance features Vivaldi’s "Nightmare Concerto," Tartini’s "Devil’s Trill" sonata, a Red Priest original "Fantasia on La Follia" and others. As part of the University of Colorado’s Artist Series, the performance will be preceded by a conversation with CU Professor of Musicology Thomas Riis in Macky Room 102.

Red Priest performs Nightmare in Venice–A Baroque Fantasy at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 28, at Macky Auditorium, CU Campus, Boulder, 303-492-8008. The pre-concert conversation with Thomas Riis starts at 6:45 and is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.cuconcerts.org.

PAN PICK#2

Oct. 23 – If you were on Family Feud and had to describe Boulder in two words, the B-dub survey says you’d be well advised to answer "Bluegrass" and "Halloween." And you could describe the joining of those answers with two more words: Shanti Groove.

With Halloween right around the corner, it’s time for the second-annual Shanti Groove Barn Burner, a musical experience that the band is calling a "freaky fall party."

A stylistic hodgepodge of jam improvisation and every genre ending in "grass," Shanti Groove offers a unique take on the traditional, foot-stomping music that Boulderites drink up like so much moonshine. For its Halloween pre-party, the band is bringing along the giant pig (don’t ask) and doing up the Fox like the broad side of a barn. There will also be a DVD film crew on hand to capture this hoedown throwdown for posterity.

Joining Shanti Groove will be Portland, Ore.-based ThaMuseMeant.

The Shanti Groove Barn Burner starts at 9 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Fox Theatre, 1135 13th St., Boulder, 303-443-3399.
