The restaurant boasts fresh foods including appetizers such as Seaweed Salad ($4), Gyoza (pork or chicken–six for $4.50), and a variety of soups. The entrees are divided into several categories, including Curry, Popular Stir-Fried, and Noodles. They also have a selection of sushi, including nigiri, sashimi, and rolls. Belgian Bakery
3267 28th Street, 303-449-7240
At Belgian Bakery, you’ll find glass counters filled with pain au chocolat, eclairs, turnovers and buttercream pastries galore. You’ll also find soup, quiche, breakfast rolls stuffed with ham, cheese, tomato and more. The breads are baked daily, and are perhaps the bakery’s strongest point, so stop in for a loaf of honey apricot on Fridays, or a great, dense white bread on Saturdays. Don’t forget the yummy chicken curry sandwich. The breakfast special sounds good, too–steamed scrambled eggs on a croissant, with coffee or juice, for $3.95. Espresso drinks are also available. Panera
1207 Pearl Street, 303-545-BAKE
Panera is a bright, clattering bakery, serving sandwiches, soup and sourdough loaves by the dozen. It’s a chain bakery with locations nationwide, and judging by the lines at the counters, lots of Boulderites are happy to welcome it to the neighborhood. Panera is in the spirit of giving–Operation Dough-Nation is a charitable program that celebrates the idea that "the universal spirit of bread is sharing." The company makes cash and fresh bread donations to local food pantries, and donates all unsold bread at the end of each day to hunger relief agencies. (Dec. 28-Jan. 3, 2001) $

Walnut Café
3073 Walnut, 303-447-2315
The Walnut Café isn’t open that late (or early), but you can get your pancakes and bacon from 7 am to 4 pm, seven days a week, and that’s an awfully good thing. If scrambled eggs at two o’clock in the afternoon don’t thrill you, there’s a nice lunch menu, too, with salads, sandwiches and all that good stuff. With most of the breakfasts you can choose one or two side dishes from a list that includes fresh fruit, blueberry cornbread, toast, pancakes and more. Don’t go home without a slice of the café’s famous pie. The portions are gigantic, probably a quarter of the entire pie. Owner Dana Derichsweiler makes all the desserts herself. Tuesday is pie day, so you can get a slice for just $1.95, and the list changes each week. (Jan. 25-31, 2001) $-$$

Mij Bani
2005 18th Street, 303-442-7000
Mij Bani is one of Boulder’s best spots to find curries, flatbreads, stews, chutney and other gloriously flavored Indian foods and relishes. Mij Bani means "grand feast"–aptly named, since this is exactly what you’ll get. Remove your shoes at the door, and ask for one of the low tables, where you’ll sit on pillows and have plenty of space to recline. Without a stiff-backed chair to keep you upright, you’ll be more likely to slow your fork-shoveling to a chilled-out tasting session, and sink into sensory indulgence. Of course, if your Western sensibilities require traditional seating, there are tall tables available. (Jan. 18-24, 2001) $$

During hot weather, there’s a selection of iced teas, and for flair you can try the Bubble Tea–a carbonated blend of fruit juice and tea (also made with Champagne). The international menu features everything from Chicken Satay to a Sweet Potato Samosa, Cajun Gumbo to Korean Pan Fried Noodles. The dessert highlight is certainly the House Tea Gingerbread ($4.50), made with Boulder Tangerine tea and topped with a dollop of fresh whipped cream blended with five spices. There are salads, wraps, risotto, enchiladas, curry and plenty of vegetarian items on the menu. (Feb. 22-28, 2001) $$-$$$

At Boulder’s Triana, you will find marvelous, Spanish-influenced creations coming from the kitchen. You’ll also find a pleasant, professional waitstaff and a renovated space that will have you shouting "ole!" James Mazzio, who landed on Food & Wine magazine’s "Top Ten Best New Chefs in America List" in 1999 for his creations at Boulder’s 15°, is the executive chef and co-owner. Mazzio has worked with and under some of the country’s best, including the world-renown Thomas Keller of Napa Valley’s French Laundry. Try the granny smith-goat cheese salad and the La Mancha Stew. Entrées include a roasted quail glazed in cinnamon and honey, and the bar is in top form with special margaritas and sangria on the list. (Dec. 7-13, 2000) $$$

Café Gondolier
1738 Pearl Street, 303-443-5015
Boulder’s Italian institution, Café Gondolier, has re-opened in its new location at 1738 Pearl St., in the old Harvest Restaurant/Mellow Mushroom location. Since 1960, Café Gondolier has been serving some of Boulder’s finest Italian food, including thin-crust pizza and a college student’s best friend, all-you-can-eat spaghetti specials for $4.99 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Outstanding specials include Chicken Frittura Picatta and Herb-crusted Salmon.

The new location is spacious and friendly, using an open-kitchen style with high ceilings and a patio which should prove popular for a quiet espresso and a slice of their famous home-made cheesecake. The trademark antique espresso machine, imported from Turin, Italy in 1904, is proudly displayed behind the cash register. (April 5-11, 2001) $-$$

There are dozens of pasta dishes, and lunchtime oven sandwiches, including Italian sausage and chicken caesar. The spicy Romano chicken is quite good. Bowtie pasta was tossed with spicy cream sauce, cayenne pepper, grilled chicken, sundried tomatoes, green onions, mushrooms and artichoke hearts. Carino’s serves Italian sodas made to order. Syrups, like raspberry or lemon, are added to soda water, and a cream soda is created with a splash of cream. The Italian Margarita is also good, made with a splash of amaretto and served frozen. Oasis Brewery
1095 Canyon Blvd., 303-449-0363
The Oasis Brewery is a place to relieve your workday tedium and quaff your thirst with a finely crafted brew or cocktail. Better yet, the menu has something for just about anybody–pizza, pasta, flashy Mexican-like chipotle shrimp enchiladas and highbrow American like beef tenderloin in balsamic jus. The crispy rellenos ($5.95) are fantastic, but not for the timid–the anaheim chilis and pepper jack cheese stuffed inside deep-fried wonton wrappers will leave your lips tingling. If you’re wanting something a little bit rowdy, with plenty of conversation and folks having a good time, the Oasis is just right. (Feb. 8-14, 2001) $$

The Rock Bottom Brewery
10633 Westminster Blvd., #900, 720-566-0198
Rock Bottom Brewery has plenty of pasta, salads, sandwiches, appetizers and more to keep big groups happy, and you can get beer logo glasses for just $3.95 on Tuesday nights, with a free fill-up of your favorite brew, including Buffalo Gold and Single Track Ale. The huge soft pretzels ($4.95) are the equivalent of two loaves of bread and are easily shared among four people. Hot date alert–they’re coated in tons of garlic and butter. Served with spicy cheese dip, they have flavor to spare. The club sandwich ($7.95) is fantastic and enough for two, on herbed focaccia bread with smoky ham, bacon, turkey, tomato, lettuce, onion and chipotle mayonaisse, quartered and skewered on long toothpicks.
