Panorama Pick 1 Dec. 22 — TBS' 24 Hours of A Christmas Story is an awesome holiday tradition, but it's not the only way to savor the spirit this holiday season. You can get your music fix at the Suburban Home Christmas Party at the Hi-Dive on Dec. 22. In an area better known for its homogenized granola jam/bluegrass music, Suburban Home Records reminds that music is supposed to be passionate by promoting the best local and national punk bands. Love Me Destroyer, Ghost Buffalo, Laymen Terms and Chris Fogal (formerly of The Gamits) are helping Suburban Home celebrate another year of independent music at this blowout event. The Suburban Home Christmas Party starts at 9 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 22, at the Hi-Dive, 7 S. Broadway, Denver, 720-570-4500. —Vince Darcangelo
Panorama Pick 2 Weekly Pickoff — For the holidays, the B-dub is giving you, the reader, just what you've had at the top of your wish list all season long: A brief return of the award-winning Weekly Pickoff. How the NFL has managed to navigate the first 15 weeks of the season without our help is beyond our comprehension, but we know that the playoff chase will be tons more interesting thanks to our presence. So without further ado, here are the B-dub's brilliant picks for the next to last week of the NFL season. San Diego vs. KANSAS CITY With a playoff spot hanging in the balance, the Chargers/Chiefs match-up is this weekend's marquee event. The loser will be all but eliminated, which creates the opportunity for great irony in that San Diego may have knocked off the Indy Colts and their freakin' circus monkey offense only to miss the playoffs. The Chargers looked unbeatable in last week's Bitch-Slap in the 'Nap, but they fired all their guns in their history-making effort. They will be stuck in refractory period this weekend. Don't worry, they'll get, uh, back up again, but not this week. K.C. wins, almost guaranteeing that neither team will make it to the postseason. CHICAGO vs. Green Bay Look, the B-dub doesn't give a damn about this game any more than you do from a gridiron perspective. However, this game is intriguing considering how both teams are so over-hyped. Let's just call this the MythBusters Bowl. Myth #1: The '05 Chicago Bears are comparable to the '85 Chicago Bears. The only thing the '05 Bears have in common with the '85 version is that they both played in Chicago. I don't care about points allowed and defensive rankings. The '85 Bears competed in, and demolished, a dominant NFC conference against some of the greatest teams of the Super Bowl era, such as Walsh's 49ers, Gibbs' Redskins and Parcell's Giants. The '05 Bears are playing in the weakest division in the weakest conference. If six of your games are against the NFC North, you'd better have good defensive stats. You're good, but for the love of Sweetness, stop insulting us with the mindless comparisons to one of the greatest defenses in history. Myth #2: Boy, Brett Favre is a lot of fun to watch. Enough with the Brett Favre apotheosis, people. The man was one of the greatest quarterbacks of my lifetime, and I've always been a fan. But quit giving the guy a pass just because he "plays the quarterback position like a linebacker." How many interceptions does he have this year? And how many years in a row has his team lost in the postseason because he has a bad day in the Wild Card round? It's a great example of the media's selective judgement. In a critical moment last season, Brett Favre ran beyond the line of scrimmage and knowingly heaved up a ridiculous pass in the red zone, drawing a penalty that hurt his team. He walked off the field laughing. How did the commentators respond? Oh, my, look at Brett. Boy, he's really having fun out there. He's like a little kid. Boy does he love this game! Let an unpopular quarterback, like say a Jeff George back in his day, screw up that dramatically and laugh it off and see how quickly that "fun-loving" pass becomes irresponsible and disrespectful to the other players on the team. And quit making excuses. Favre is the only quarterback in history who can throw close to 30 interceptions in a season and people will still find other people to blame. There's a good chance he's going to throw five picks against the New Monsters of the Midway and the lackey commentators will blame the interceptions on me for having written this column. PHILADELPHIA vs. Arizona Who cares about this game? No one outside of Philly and, uh, does anyone care about the Cardinals... anywhere? In fact, I'm only interested in this game because of a guy who's not even playing in it: Donny Mac. For playing in the city of brotherly love, this brother can't find any love whatsoever. It's no surprise when Rush Limbaugh goes on a boneheaded racist assault of McNabb. But when the NAACP goes after the Soup Man, I have to suspect that there must be a leak at the nitrous plant because everyone up in this mug is gettin' kinda loopy. The Philly NAACP should be ashamed of its absurd attack on Donny Mac. He deserves better than the treatment he's received. Oh, and Philly wins. —Vince Darcangelo
