California Pizza Kitchen

With more than 80 locations nationwide, CPK is going gangbusters and making patrons very happy with crazy creations on crust, such as Tandoori Chicken, Tostada and Peking Duck. If exotic pizzas don't float your boat, there are plenty of salads, appetizers, sandwiches and pasta on the menu. Located inside FlatIron Crossing mall, the atmosphere isn't exactly cozy or romantic, but it's sharp enough, with a friendly waitstaff and an open kitchen for chef-gazing. (Sept. 14-20, 2000) $-$$

Wild Basin Lodge
1130 County Rd., 84 West, Allenspark, 303-747-2545
Readers should be aware that the restaurant menu has ended as of Oct. 1, but will reopen next April. The bar and deli are open year 'round for burgers, sandwiches and soups, and I highly encourage everyone to make a stop for a warm late lunch or dinner and good mug of beer while you're touring the mountain area this winter. You can stay at the lodge, too, since it functions as a bed and breakfast. Breakfast is served at 8:30 am, and they'll help you prepare a picnic lunch from the deli (granted, for the next few months you'll have to snowshoe, cross-country ski or ride horseback to your destination, but that's why you live in Colorado, isn't it?). The honeymoon suite sounds particularly nice, with a whirlpool jacuzzi tub. You can find information about Wild Basin Lodge including menus, lodging, livery, banquet and wedding facilities, and a map at www.wildbasinlodge.com. (Oct. 5-11, 2000) $$

P.F. Chang's China Bistro
1 West Flatiron Circle, Broomfield, 720-887-6200
It'll take about two hours to get from the waiting list to a table at P.F. Chang's on a Friday night. But lettuce wraps and crispy honey shrimp are waiting for you on the other side, and the 11-foot-tall horses guarding the entrance and throngs of mall-weary passersby are fine entertainment for helping to pass the time. Chang's offers both brown and white rice, and the ever-popular Dan-Dan noodles-a rich sauce of chilies, garlic, scallions and ground chicken covers hot egg noodles, and shredded cucumber and bean sprouts on the side lend a cooling effect. Chang's cuisine reflects influences from several regions of China-Canton, Shanghai, Szechwan, Hunan and Mongolia-and adds a dash of contemporary American flair for a slightly extravagant, utterly satisfying experience. Seafood is especially prominent in Vietnamese cooking, and this menu features entire categories of shrimp, lobster, crab, clam, fish, squid, scallop and mussel dishes. Pork spare ribs, dozens of beef and chicken items, eight different tofu entrées, and soups and noodle bowls galore mean there is something for everyone at Viet-Hoa (there's even grilled quail with butter). Bagel Mesa
637 G-2 S. Broadway, 303-554-0197
There's another bagel option in South Boulder these days, found in the Table Mesa shopping center in the old Brillig Works location. Bagel Mesa features Billy's Bagels-they used to be baked in Gunbarrel and shipped to various locations in surrounding areas. Now that their Table Mesa spot is up and running, you can walk in and get a bagely breakfast or lunch straight from the oven. The grilled panini are great for lunch, and the fresh cinnamon rolls are big and thick, covered in a cream cheese frosting that's deliciously buttery, not sticky-sweet. (Nov. 30-Dec. 6, 2000) $

Rocky Mountain Bagel Works
4800 Baseline, #B-101, 303-554-0193
For a baker's dozen of some of Boulder's best bagels, look no further-and be sure to try the parmesan. The Bagel Works bagel is thicker than some, with that heavenly chewy center we all love. Try Spicy Mexican spread on a green chili bagel; lowfat mixed berry on cinnamon-sugar; green olive on an asiago-herb. Plain, veggie and strawberry cream cheeses are available to top plain, onion, poppyseed, and the like for those looking for something more familiar. There are loads of sandwich fixings, too. Smoked turkey, pastrami, ham, roast beef, chicken salad and hummus are all in the deli case, along with cheeses and veggies. You can build your own or go for something on the menu, like the New Yorker ($4.95, lox, cream cheese, and red onion), or a BLT ($3.50). Breakfast bagels, coffee drinks, and muffins are available too, and the cooler has lots of juices, iced chai and sodas. (Oct. 26-Nov. 3, 2000) $

Dishes are created from scratch in the Darjeeling kitchen. A rich spinach dish is made with chopped greens, firm tofu, half-and-half and various spices. Cauliflower is steeped in a sauce of ginger paste, turmeric and other exotic flavors, mildly spicy and a pretty orange color. Small meatballs are made of very finely ground meat and heavily flavored with spices like cumin and cardamom. The chicken legs were served in a rich, dark sauce. There are seven varieties of naan bread ($1.95-$2.95), from regular to garlic to whole wheat. The Sink
1165 13th St., 303-444-7465
The Hill without The Sink would be like Boulder without the Flatirons-it's been a local institution for generations. Grilled sandwiches include several burgers (mushroom, garden or southwest), BBQ chicken, and a French dip. A reuben and club sandwich are also available, and five different salads provide lighter fare. The pizza pies can be topped with everything from pepperoni to roasted garlic, or you can order a "specialty pie" like the Slaughterhouse V, topped with spicy chicken, sausage, Canadian bacon, pepperoni and hamburger. Juan Orleans
400 W. South Boulder Rd., 303-665-2065
Juan Orleans is the kind of place where, if you're a regular, everybody knows your name. And even if it's your first visit, your waiter will likely know your name by the end of the appetizers. It's a friendly neighborhood joint in Lafayette, where the décor (beer posters and mardi gras masks) is comfortably worn and faded, the radio plays good old rock and roll, and the pool table is conveniently located near the big screen TV. The menu features catfish, crawfish, burgers and more, and if you stop by on the right night you can take advantage of the all-you-can-eat specials. (Nov. 23-29, 2000) $$
